Founders Weekend Band Contest

The University of Minnesota, Morris hosted a contest for two bands to open for Monroe Crossing and the Johnny Holm Band during the campus’ Founders Weekend festivities.

To compete, bands submitted a video playing either original or covered music, to the University of Minnesota, Morris. The videos were posted to the campus's YouTube channel. The two winning bands were chosen based on a combination of public votes received on youtube.com/UMMorris and by a panel of local judges.

As winners of the online band contest, Work of Cunning Giants and The Upfuls open for Monroe Crossing and Johnny Holm Band.

Work of Cunning Giants is comprised of Darren Baum ’12, Scottie Hedstrom ’13, and Drew Schield ’12. They play original music that incorporates elements of rock and metal sounds. Braum, Hedstrom, and Schield started Work of Cunning Giants last year and have been playing together ever since.

The Upfuls band is comprised of Dave Herring, Jared Fink, Jeff Rogers, JR Hartley, and Nate Sperl ’11. They play reggae tunes by Bob Marley and various other artists with influences from numerous musical genres. Sperl, the band’s UMM student, joined the group last summer after he nailed his audition with the group. He loves their sound.

University of Minnesota, Morris Founders Weekend Band Contest Official Rules »

  1. Eligibility
    University of Minnesota, Morris Founders Weekend Band Contest (“The Contest”) is open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States (including D.C.) who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry. All employees, as well as the immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings and children) and household members of each such employee are eligible. All applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited or restricted. There is no entry fee.
  2. Contest Period
    The Contest begins at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time (“ET”) on July 26, 2010, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Central Time (CT) on August 20, 2010 (the “Contest Period”). The Contest Period consists of a video submission phase which begins at midnight CT on July 26, 2010, and ends at 11:59 p.m. CT on August 20, 2010 (the “Video Submission Phase”); a voting period which begins at 12 a.m. (midnight) CT on July 26, 2010 and ends at 11:59 p.m. CT on August 27, 2010 (the “Voting Period”).
  3. Contest Submission
    Video Submission Phase:
    During the Contest, videos can be submitted in one of two ways:

    • Mail a CD/DVD to:

    • All video submissions must comply with the “Submission Requirements” listed below.
    • Approved videos will be posted to the University of Minnesota, Morris YouTube channel, youtube.com/UMMorris.
    Submission Requirements:
    • Each submission must contain an original song/music or the Participant must obtain permission to cover a copyrighted song.
    • The Participant must have permission to use the image of each person who may be identified from the video, and names, biographical information, conditions of physical or mental health and other private information ascertainable by use in the video.
    • Each Participant must be a contributing member of the band at the time of submission.
    • Band contact information must accompany video submission.
    • Submission must comply with video requirements.
    • Video submission must be in one of the following formats: QuickTime .MOV, Windows .AVI, or .MPG files.
    • Submission must not exceed 10 minutes in length.
    • Submission must not exceed 100 MB in size.
    • Submission must comply with the YouTube Terms of Service located at http://youtube.com/t/terms.
    Any Submission that includes content that is deemed inappropriate, indecent, obscene or otherwise does not comply with the YouTube Terms of Service located at http://youtube.com/t/terms, as determined by The University of Minnesota, Morris in its sole discretion, will not be eligible. The University of Minnesota, Morris is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible, or misdirected entries, which are void. In addition, by entering, contestants represent and warrant that the entries that they submit: are their own original creations or have proper permissions to use material, do not infringe any other person’s or entity’s rights and has obtained permission from the people featured in the Submission to enter this Contest.

    Limit: Each participant may enter one (1) Submission during the Contest Period. Multiple Participants are not permitted to share the same email address. Any attempt by any Participant to enter more than one (1) Submission by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations, or any other methods will void all Submissions entered by that Participant and that Participant, at the sole discretion of The University of Minnesota, Morris, may be disqualified. Use of any automated system to participate is prohibited and will result in disqualification. In the event of a dispute as to any registration, the authorized account holder of the email address used to register will be deemed to be the registrant or Participant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address. The potential winners may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder.
  4. Judging
    Two bands will be awarded one (1) slot each to open for Monroe Crossing and the Johnny Holm Band (the “Grand Prize”) at the University of Minnesota, Morris Founders Weekend Street Dance Saturday, September 25, 2010, and one (1) Honorable Mention that will serve as an alternate. Online public voting will account for half (50%) of the total score. Qualified judges, whose decisions regarding the contest and related matters are final, will choose two (2) Grand Prize winners and one (1) Honorable Mention based on the following criteria (the “Judging Criteria”): (25%) creativity, (25%) entertainment value, and (50%) appropriateness to the occasion. Grand Prize winners will be notified by e-mail and or phone by September 3, 2010. Winners must comply with all contest rules as published. The potential Grand Prize winner (or parent/legal guardian if winner is a minor in his state of residence) will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability and Publicity Release, where permitted, within seven (7) days from the date of notification. In the event that any potential winner is disqualified for any reason, the prize will be awarded to a Participant to be selected by the Qualified judge.
  5. Prizes: Two (2) Grand Prizes and one (1) Honorable Mention
    The Grand Prize consists of two (2) bands chosen to open for Monroe Crossing and Johnny Holm Band for up to 45 minutes at the 2010 Celebration Street Dance on September 25, 2010. Performances for the two (2) bands start at 1:30 p.m. and end by 3:30 p.m. One (1) Honorable Mention will be rewarded. The Honorable Mention will take the place of any disqualified or absent band. Travel costs are not included in the prize package.
  6. General Rules
    By entering or participating in the Contest, Participants agree to be bound by these Official Rules. The University of Minnesota, Morris assumes no responsibility for electronic hardware, programming or software malfunctions, or failures, or line connections, accessibility or availability, or technical failures of any kind, or unauthorized human intervention, or the incorrect or inaccurate capture of any Submission or other information, or for the failure to capture any such information. The University of Minnesota, Morris is not responsible for: (1) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Participants, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest; (2) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (3) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the Submission process or the Contest; or (4) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries. Further, if, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned by reason of infection by virus, bugs, worms, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which, in the sole opinion of the University of Minnesota, Morris may corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Contest, The University of Minnesota, Morris reserves the right, at their sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest, and select the winner for the Contest, from the entries received prior to the action taken or in other such manner as deemed fair and appropriate by the University of Minnesota, Morris. The sole compensation for submission is consideration of the submission for inclusion in the Founders Weekend Band Contest and any award that may be granted. University will pay Participants no additional compensation nor be liable to Participants under any circumstances, including damages arising from the University’s own negligence. Participant may identify the University and the Contest in resumes and include the video in portfolios, but cannot use the University’s name or marks (including colors and music) to promote the video or Participant’s work. Each submission’s chance of winning is based on the number of submissions and the merits of them. For a list of award winners, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the address set out above.
